Enhancing Learning with Proficiency Scales at Willmar Public Schools

Over the past three days, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the Willmar Public School
buildings and observe outstanding work. Our teachers were engaged in the creation of "proficiency scales," a term that may sound technical but simply means to optimize the learning experiences of all our learners. The Willmar Education Association and the Willmar Public School District agreed to a memorandum of understanding for five additional days throughout the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years to complete this important work.

Proficiency scales serve as pedagogical compasses, delineating the progression of students' skills and knowledge acquisition within specific educational objectives (Marzano, 2017). This empowers educators with the ability to gauge the progress of each learner's academic journey, thus guiding instruction effectively.

During discussions with our teachers, I discovered that initially, coordinating classroom instruction with the construction of proficiency scales was a challenge. However, they also shared with me that through repetition and more experience, the process became more manageable, effective, and efficient.

Of particular significance in this work is the clarity these proficiency scales provide to teaching and learning. By shedding light on students' academic pathways, teachers can effectively adapt their pedagogical strategies, ensuring personalized and efficient learning experiences.

Beneath the surface, our teachers and administrators have a strong belief that these proficiency scales will substantively enhance learning outcomes and contribute to mitigating achievement disparities between our students. The promise of this work is the prospect of a more enriched and equitable education for all.

I am immensely proud of our teachers and administrators for their unwavering dedication to this work. Families can take great pride in knowing that their children are receiving an education from educators who are not only dedicated but care deeply for each and every one of their students!

Fostering Community Unity: Willmar's United Way and Hope for our City

As shared in a recent blog post, the community of Willmar, has been making strides to ensure the well-being of its residents through remarkable initiatives such as Family Promise and those I'll discuss today. This fantastic community continues to impress by offering "Hope for Our City" food distribution and the United Way of West Central Minnesota's "Suff the Bus" campaign. These endeavors not only address critical needs within the community but also serve as powerful catalysts for bringing the community and school district closer together.

Hope For Our City Food Distribution: Nourishing More Than Bodies

In an era where food security is an ever-present concern, the Hope For Our City Food Distribution provides hope for Willmar's residents. This initiative, driven by volunteers and local organizations, seeks to provide nutritious meals to those who are struggling to make ends meet. Beyond filling stomachs, this program offers nourishment for the soul, reminding individuals that they are not alone in their challenges.

The food distribution events have a profound impact on the community. Families facing financial hardships find a source of relief and support, allowing them to redirect their limited resources toward other essential needs. Children, who might otherwise go to bed hungry, are given a chance to grow and learn without the burden of an empty stomach. Through this initiative, the community demonstrates its commitment to the well-being of its residents, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.

From a school district perspective, this endeavor provides the base level of need in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Physiological Needs, such as air, water, food, shelter, sleep, and clothing. Students must have these needs met in order to be in a position to learn. Efforts like this by our community members assist in ensuring the needs of our students and families are met.

United Way's 'Stuff the Bus' Campaign: Education and Empowerment

Without a doubt, education is the cornerstone of progress, and the United Way of West Central Minnesota's 'Stuff the Bus' campaign in Willmar supports this belief. Recognizing the importance of equipping students with the tools they need to succeed, this initiative focuses on collecting and distributing school supplies to students in need. The impact extends beyond just school materials; it sends a message to our students that our community values their education and is invested in their future.

As the community comes together to 'stuff the bus' with school supplies, an environment of camaraderie and shared purpose emerges. Businesses, individuals, and organizations collaborate to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, starts the school year on an equal footing. This unity amplifies the community's commitment to the success of its young learners, building a sense of solidarity that goes beyond socioeconomic boundaries.

Unifying a Community and School District: The Positive Ripple Effect

Both the Hope for our City Food Distribution and the United Way of West Central Minnesota's 'Stuff the Bus' campaign extend far beyond their immediate impacts. These initiatives create a ripple effect that unites the community and school district in profound ways. I witnessed this firsthand over the course of the past two weeks and this evening. As a member of the United Way of West Central Minnesota Board of Directors, I was given the opportunity to not only pick up the school supplies collected from our community's businesses and places of worship but I was also able to distribute the school supplies to our families. Witnessing the compassion of our community and the appreciation of our children and families was humbling.

These initiatives serve as education opportunities, teaching younger generations the values of compassion, empathy, and the importance of giving back. Students witness the positive change that their efforts can effect, learning that even small actions can lead to significant impacts. This experience bridges the gap between the school district and the community, creating a sense of community.

The Hope for our City Food Distribution and the United Way of West Central Minnesota's 'Stuff the Bus' campaign exemplify the remarkable ways in which communities can unite for the greater good. By addressing fundamental needs and investing in education, Willmar's residents are creating connections, nurturing compassion, and cultivating a sense of unity.

Thank you to all those involved in making the 'Stuff the Bus' campaign a success and to those who lead the efforts of Hope for Our City. A special thank you to Seyward Ask, Callie Henscheid, and others of the United Way of West Central Minnesota and to Dawn Clouse and her dedicated volunteers at Hope for Our City for making both these endeavors a success in our community. You are appreciated!

Uniting Hearts and Healing Wounds: The Impact of the Our Heroes Tour

In a world often consumed by the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy to overlook the sacrifices made by first responders, the military, and their families, otherwise known as heroes. But what if there was a way to bridge the gap between civilians and heroes, creating a bond that transcends words? Enter the "Our Heroes Tour," a heartwarming organization that has been transforming lives and positively recognizing the heroes in our communities.

Led by Founder and President Jeremy Wahlberg, the "Our Heroes Tour" isn't just a regular
roadshow; it's a powerful vehicle of change that brings together those impacted by our brave men and women who serve our country and communities. Through these unique experiences, the "Our Heroes Tour" is breathing life into these stories and is providing opportunities for those impacted to reconnect and build lifelong relationships.

One remarkable story that has emerged from the tour is that of Jed Anderson, a young man whose life was forever altered by a tragic farm accident. Jed's inspiring journey of resilience and healing is amazing. Jed nominated Renville County Deputy Sheriff, Andrew Hussman for the "Our Heroes Tour" for saving his life. Due to that nomination, Jed and Deputy Sheriff Hussman enjoyed a day together on the lake perfecting various water sports and a wonderful lunch. The impact of the "Our Heroes Tour" extends beyond the individuals it directly impacts. At a recent Willmar Rotary Club meeting, the discussion centered on the profound influence of the tour on the local community. Rotarians thoroughly enjoyed learning about the "Our Heroes Tour" from Jeremy and the story of Jed.

So, how can you get involved and support this incredible initiative? There are several ways to make a difference:

By coming together to honor and appreciate heroes in our communities, they're not only bridging the gap between heroes and civilians but also healing wounds and building a brighter future for everyone.

Nurturing Excellence: The Transformative Power of Willmar Senior High's REACH Program and the Gratitude for Community Support

In the realm of education, innovative initiatives often hold the key to shaping students' futures and empowering them to reach their full potential. Willmar Senior High's REACH (Realizing Each child's Ability to Create their Highest potential) Program, led by the visionary Mr. Castiglione, is a stellar example of how personalized learning, mentorship, and community involvement can create a nurturing environment for students to thrive.

Empowering Through Personalized Learning: The REACH Program

At the heart of the REACH Program lies the belief that every student is unique and possesses untapped potential waiting to be discovered. Unlike conventional educational models, REACH goes beyond the ordinary by tailoring the learning experience to cater to individual strengths and learning styles. Mr. Castiglione's leadership ensures that students are not confined by rigid structures but are encouraged to explore, question, and create, fostering a deep sense of ownership over their educational journey.

WPS Staff: Inspiring Growth Through Relationships

Mr. Castiglione and his team’s impact on the REACH Program extends beyond the classroom. As a leader, mentor, and guide, he understands that fostering meaningful relationships is instrumental in cultivating an environment of growth. Through open communication, empathy, and a genuine commitment to their students' success, Mr. Castiglione and his team create a space where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to strive for excellence.

A Collaborative Approach: Senior High Staff and Community Involvement

Mr. Castiglione's leadership extends beyond his own efforts. He understands that true growth thrives in a collaborative environment. This is why he actively involves additional senior high staff members who share his passion for fostering personalized learning experiences. Together, they create a supportive network that amplifies the impact of the REACH Program.

Moreover, Mr. Castiglione's visionary approach extends to the community. He recognizes the value of external mentors who can offer diverse perspectives and insights. By including community members as mentors, students are exposed to a broader range of expertise and real-world experiences. This not only enhances their learning but also equips them with invaluable skills for life beyond the classroom.

Gratitude for Community Support: Willmar Rotary Club

Mr. Castiglione and his colleagues are profoundly grateful for the unwavering support that the REACH Program has received from the local Willmar Rotary Club. The Club's commitment to education, literacy, and community development has played a pivotal role in enhancing the program's reach and impact. Their support has enabled the program to expand its offerings, provide additional resources, and connect students with mentors who contribute to their holistic growth.

Transforming Lives: The Ripple Effect

The positive impact of the REACH Program under Mr. Castiglione's leadership is undeniable. Students who go through this program and graduate do so not only with academic excellence but also with a profound sense of self-confidence, a strong work ethic, and the ability to think critically and creatively. These qualities extend beyond their school years and shape their trajectories in higher education and the professional world.

As the REACH Program continues to flourish, inspired by Mr. Castiglione's unwavering dedication and supported by the Willmar Rotary Club, it serves as a reminder that education is more than just textbooks and exams. It's about cultivating an environment where students can
grow, flourish, and become well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society.

In a world that constantly evolves, Willmar Senior High's REACH Program, led by Mr. Castiglione, stands as a testament to the power of personalized education, mentorship, and community collaboration.
